BSA 2017 Curriculum Assessment by alumni and industry experts

When the 2017 Bachelor of Science in Accountancy curriculum was presented by the Board of Accountancy, the Philippine Institute of Public Accountants and the National Association of CPAs in Education (nACPAE) in numerous forums it can be said that proper consultations were made. Repeatedly in the said gatherings the same question of “How is our curriculum doing compared to our ASEAN peers?” always arises. Indeed, the consultations were precipitated by urgency that change is due.

In Sacred Heart College, the BSA curriculum has been evolving naturally for many years doing its good work of producing graduates who can tackle the board exam with confidence. But still there is a need to consult own alumni and local industry experts and ask them “How is our curriculum doing”. Their answers on the formal review using Google Survey form may precipitate the formal review process and in the end their introspection or feedback may help create a culture of engagement thereby finding what can be improve in the local set up.

Thirty six responded in the Google form uploaded on October 11, 2018. One Hundred percent (100%) of them said that the new BSA 2017 curriculum” will prepare the students for entry level jobs” and 100% of them also said the “program operate in a manner commensurate with Sacred Heart College Mission Statement and current strategy enhancement”. When they asked “Are there any aspects of the BSA 2017 curriculum which are over or under represented within our curricula”, 50% (n=18) said yes and these 50% said that there is a need to focus more on “ PHILIPPINE ACCOUNTING STANDARD, because of vast growing IT, various accounting software/systems are available to the market. SAP is a good example but it use only by big companies. Most SME's use cheaper system. Other universities already introduced some accounting system like Xero and Quickbooks. This is also to expose students in other accounting software used by different kinds of companies”. They also said that there should be “another subject for taxation (TAX 3)”. When the 36 respondents were asked “What are the overall strengths and weaknesses of our curricula, and are there any aspects which might be improved?”, they said “ In terms of technicalities, BSA curricula are already good way back when I was still a student and I know it was better through the years. The strength lies on the values integrated in the subject. The weakness is students are too pampered inside the classroom now because of the millenial thing but I know it is adjusted to the cope up what students need now but in terms of employment, it doesn't work that way. They further added that “ Not all topics included in the CPALE have been tackled and the SAP training should be discussed extensively.”

The assessment achieved the objective of knowing “how is our curriculum doing” and the findings will be used to further improve the BSA program offerings.
